The Netherlands has a small but long-established adult nightlife scene, and it is far more spread out than most visitors expect. Our directory currently holds nine listed venues across four cities: five in Amsterdam, two in Rotterdam, one in The Hague and one in Tilburg. They range from bar-format venues with stage shows to gentlemen’s clubs with private rooms, and they are run under ordinary Dutch hospitality law rather than any special “strip club” regime.
One point worth clearing up immediately: strip clubs and Amsterdam’s window-based red-light industry in De Wallen are two separate businesses. They sit on some of the same streets, but they are licensed differently, sell different things and should not be treated as interchangeable. This guide covers only the club and bar venues in our directory.
How Dutch nightlife venues are regulated
Licensing in the Netherlands is handled at municipal level, not nationally. Any venue serving alcohol needs an operating licence (exploitatievergunning) from its municipality plus an alcohol licence under the Alcoholwet — the act that replaced the old Drank- en Horecawet. The legal drinking age is 18 for all alcohol, and staff must ask for ID from anyone who looks under 25. Everyone aged 14 or over in the Netherlands must be able to show identification on request.
Amsterdam has tightened the screws further. The city adopted a new hospitality policy that sorts every venue into weight categories with fixed closing times — light venues close at 22:00, regular venues at 01:00 (02:00 at weekends), medium venues at 01:00 (03:00 at weekends), and only “heavy” venues such as nightclubs may run to 04:00 on weekdays and 05:00 at weekends. New terrace permits, opening times and exemptions came in at the start of 2026, with the roughly 4,500 existing venues being reclassified area by area through to 2032. In practice, closing times now vary by venue, so check before you plan a late night.
Amsterdam has also restricted tourism around De Wallen. Since 1 April 2020, commercial guided tours past sex workers’ windows are banned outright, tour groups are capped at 15 people, guides must be licensed, and tours are only permitted between 08:00 and 22:00. The long-discussed Erotisch Centrum — a purpose-built complex on the Europaboulevard in Amsterdam Zuid — was dropped by the city’s new coalition in June 2026, so the district’s layout is not changing in the near term.
Amsterdam
All five Amsterdam listings sit in or near the city centre. Bananen Bar & Club is on Oudezijds Achterburgwal 37, a first-floor bar built around stage performances. Hospital Bar, at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 97, is a lap-dance bar with a medical theme that opened in 2014 and shares ownership with several other venues in the area. Moulin Rouge Amsterdam, at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 5–7, is a long-running theatre-format venue in a canalside building with close-in seating.
Away from that strip, La Vie Deux sits on Thorbeckeplein 22, a square with a long history of erotic clubs; it reopened after renovation in February 2011 and styles itself on a 1930s French strip club. Its older sibling, La Vie en Proost, is listed at Bethlehemsteeg 23.
Rotterdam
Rotterdam’s two listings are both on ‘s-Gravendijkwal. Lido Night Club Rotterdam at number 124 advertises a bar, dancing, private suites, security and valet parking. Club OQ at number 115 lists a €25 entrance fee including three drinks, live shows and private rooms, and states that it welcomes women and couples as well as men.
The Hague and Tilburg
Mayfair Club on Bilderdijkstraat 108 in Den Haag positions itself as a gentlemen’s club, with a bar heavy on premium spirits and champagne plus private rooms. In Tilburg, De Nacht Tilburg on Heuvel 47a lists opening hours of 22:00 to 06:00 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with pole shows and private lap dances.
What to check before you go
- Confirm opening hours directly with the venue. Amsterdam’s closing-time reclassification runs through 2032 and applies venue by venue, so published hours can be out of date. Call ahead rather than relying on a listing.
- Agree the price before you order. Entrance fees, drink packages and private-room charges differ sharply between venues — Club OQ publishes a flat €25 including three drinks, while others publish nothing. Ask what a round or a private dance costs, and ask for an itemised bill.
- Carry ID and mind the basics. You must be able to show identification from age 14, and the drinking age is 18. The UK Foreign Office also warns of pickpocketing around central Amsterdam, drink spiking, and criminals posing as plain-clothes police to obtain cash and cards — genuine Dutch police do not carry shiny badges.
