Iowa runs a small but distinctive strip club scene. Our directory currently lists 11 clubs across five Iowa cities: Des Moines, Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, Carter Lake and Waterloo. What makes Iowa unusual is not the number of venues but the legal structure behind them — a state obscenity statute with a wide “theater” exception, and a 2012 Iowa Supreme Court ruling that stripped cities of much of their power to regulate nude dancing. The practical result is a state where several clubs advertise fully nude shows, but where almost none of those clubs sell you a drink.
Iowa’s nudity law and the theater exception
The controlling statute is Iowa Code § 728.5, “Public indecent exposure in certain establishments.” It makes it a serious misdemeanor for an owner or manager to allow exposure of the genitals or female breast nipple by an entertainer, exposure by waitstaff, live or simulated sex acts, or advertising that such activity is permitted.
Two details matter for visitors. First, the ban is not tied to a liquor licence. That was the pre-1997 version of the law. After amendments upheld in Farkas v. Miller (8th Cir. 1998), § 728.5 applies to any place of business required to obtain a sales or use tax permit — an amendment specifically written to close the loophole that had let alcohol-free “juice bars” offer nude dancing. Second, subsection 3 exempts a theater, concert hall, art center, museum, or similar establishment which is primarily devoted to the arts or theatrical performances. Only the provision protecting minors survives that exception.
That exception is what Iowa clubs rely on. In Mall Real Estate, LLC v. City of Hamburg (Iowa Supreme Court, 27 July 2012), a club qualified as a theater for live performances, and the court held that state obscenity law preempted a city ordinance that would have licensed sexually oriented businesses, banned alcohol on the premises, banned tipping performers and dictated stage layout. Two justices dissented.
On local rules: the 2012 opinion expressly did not address zoning ordinances, which remain subject to a separate analysis, so city zoning still shapes where clubs can open in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. And despite the theory that Iowa clubs can be nude and licensed, the listings tell a different story: the fully nude venues in our directory describe themselves as BYOB, not as bars. Nudity and a liquor licence still do not mix comfortably in practice.
Des Moines
The capital has the largest cluster — four listings. Big Earl’s Goldmine at 4745 NW 2nd St describes itself as a full nude establishment and BYOB: patrons may bring beer, wine or champagne, but no hard liquor, and non-alcoholic drinks are sold on site. The same venue was one of the plaintiffs in the 1998 Eighth Circuit case. The Lumberyard at 1504 NE 54th Ave also advertises totally nude and BYOB. Minx Showpalace at 1510 NE Broadway Ave bills itself as a gentlemen’s club with nightly live stage shows, and The Outer Limits Pub at 6560 NE 14th St rounds out the city.
Council Bluffs and Carter Lake
These two towns sit across the river from Omaha, Nebraska, and draw heavily on that metro. Lipstix at 1501 N 16th St is locally owned, open 365 days a year and less than five minutes from downtown Omaha. Bottoms Up Lounge at 2800 Twin City Dr offers semi-nude dancers, no cover charge, motorcycle parking and a casual dress code. Iowa Playhouse at 19201 Bunge Ave is BYOB — beer, wine, champagne or liquor — open five days a week, until 4am Fridays and 5am Saturdays.
In neighbouring Carter Lake, Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen’s Club Carter Lake at 2449 N 13th St is the one national chain venue in the state. It is topless rather than nude, with food and drink service, VIP bottle service, private dance booths and a separate late-night BYOB lounge — a neat illustration of how Iowa operators split licensed and unlicensed areas.
Cedar Rapids and Waterloo
Eastern Iowa has three listings. In Cedar Rapids, Dancers Ranch sits at 3000 6th St SW and Woody’s Showclub at 9395 6th St SW. In Waterloo, Fantasy Theater Live Juice Bar at 1850 W Airline Hwy advertises nude stage dancing, lap dances and private VIP rooms — and the name itself signals the juice-bar model: no alcohol sold.
What to check before you go
- Confirm the alcohol policy first. Several Iowa clubs are BYOB rather than licensed bars, and the rules differ by venue — Big Earl’s Goldmine allows beer, wine and champagne but not hard liquor, while Iowa Playhouse lists liquor as permitted. Call ahead rather than assume.
- Check nude versus topless. Iowa venues split between fully nude (typically alcohol-free or BYOB) and topless with full drink service. If it matters to you, ask before paying a cover.
- Verify hours and that the club is still trading. Closing times vary widely, with some Council Bluffs venues running to 4–5am on weekends. Several entries here have no listed website — phone is the most reliable check.
