Before anything else about nightlife in Hungary, there is an official warning worth reading in full. The U.S. Embassy in Hungary publishes a standing “Tourist Advisory for Hungary” which states that the vast majority of clubs and restaurants in Budapest are legitimate businesses offering good value and service, but that there are venues about which the Embassy has received numerous complaints from U.S. citizens for engaging in unethical business practices. The advisory lists what victims have reported: excessive billing of customers, physical intimidation to force customers to pay exorbitant bills — including holding a member of a party while others in the group pay the bill at ATMs — and assault by club or restaurant employees for non-payment. It adds that there have been incidents, although rare, where U.S. citizens were unknowingly drugged.
The Embassy’s advice is specific: do not let seemingly helpful taxi drivers or local women lure you to an establishment they recommend, as they may receive a commission for bringing victims to the venue. It also advises not to enter places that do not list prices or provide a menu with prices, and warns that a menu switch may occur at the time of a billing dispute. According to the Embassy, most of the places that have come to its attention are in Budapest’s fifth district, on or near the main tourist street, Váci utca. Note that the current version of this advisory does not name individual venues — older versions circulating on other websites are out of date, and we do not reproduce them.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says much the same in its Hungary travel advice, last updated 11 August 2026: some bars, clubs and restaurants might charge high amounts for food and drink, and tourists have been taken to cashpoints with demands for the money to pay the bill. It adds that some taxi drivers are part of these frauds and may receive a commission to recommend certain venues to passengers, and separately warns of drink spiking, particularly in Budapest’s bars.
Hungarian authorities treat this as organised crime, not as a misunderstanding. In a statement dated 13 February 2025, the Hungarian Police announced the arrest of ten suspects — five men and five women — accused of fraud for overcharging foreign guests in Budapest bars. Police said 33 victims had been identified out of several hundred, with damages exceeding one billion forints. According to the police account, women contacted wealthy foreign men through a dating app, met them in Budapest’s 7th and 8th districts and steered them to a bar in the party district, where card terminals were charged amounts wildly out of proportion to what was consumed; one victim lost over a million forints in a single night. Police said bar owners directed the operation, with bartenders, waiters and security staff involved.
How to avoid the clip joint problem
- Choose the venue yourself. Every official warning points at the same entry point: an unsolicited recommendation from a taxi driver or a stranger on the street.
- Get a printed price list before you order, and keep it on the table. Both the FCDO and the U.S. Embassy advise against venues with no visible prices.
- Pay as you go rather than running a tab, and check the amount on the card terminal screen yourself before approving it.
- Do not agree to be escorted to an ATM. This is the single behaviour most explicitly described in both advisories.
- Watch your drink. The FCDO reports drink spiking specifically in Budapest bars.
- Report it. Hungarian police take reports, and the U.S. Embassy points to a 24-hour tourist assistance line on 438-8080.

What to check before you go
- Check the venue’s own published prices. A club that publishes a drinks price list on its website has something to be held to; one that publishes nothing does not.
- Check that the address matches. The clip joint pattern relies on being taken somewhere other than the place you looked up. Note the street address in advance and confirm it on arrival.
- Check the current official advice, not an old copy of it. Read the U.S. Embassy’s Tourist Advisory and the FCDO’s Hungary page directly before you travel — both are revised, and second-hand versions elsewhere online are often years out of date.
