Gentlemen clubs in England and the UK

November 4, 2016

Gentlemen clubs in England and the UK are unique in terms of style and work conditions to the rest of gentlemen’s clubs worldwide. It is entirely focused on lap dances, or private shows, and very little is carried out on the main floor. Some clubs will have a rotation of dancers on stage, but this is normally with very little of the showmanship compared to other countries. Drinks for girls cost the same as if they would for customers as there is no drinks or champagne commission offered to the dancers. All the money is spent and made in the private rooms.

Gentlemen clubs in England and the UK run on the lap dance system. There is often no drinks commission and never a fixed salary. The dancer pays the club either a ‘house-fee’ or a small percentage of dances sold. The rest is hers to keep. It is fast paced and sometimes a little more aggressive than champagne clubs. However, there is a lot of variation in different parts of the country. The faster pace works very well for a lot of girls. Some find it easier to get many small dances to mount up rather than trying to extract large amounts in one go. Alcohol consumption is also not obligatory.

Some Gentlemen clubs in England may offer a ‘funny-money’ tipping system on stage, though this is not standardised across the country. The number of stage shows vary from club to club, with some offering a continuous rotation and some offering none at all apart from stag shows. Pole shows normally take the form of a one or two song stage stage going topless. Very few will offer full nude out on the club floor. Feature shows are very rare. Girls working in Gentlemen clubs in England make their money purely from private shows so it is very much focused on this. Management place less pressure placed on girls to hit targets. However, there is a lot of competition from other girls. Any time spent on the floor is for free, or paid for, so dancers have to be very self-motivated and ensure that they maintain focus.

The big cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle have many clubs and even more girls. However, you will still be likely to find clubs in small towns littered throughout the country. Dancing is a lot more mainstream in the UK than you will find in other parts of the world.

England, Wales and the more southern end of Scotland have the largest concentration of strip clubs. To the north of Scotland there are a pocket of clubs servicing the oil and gas workers flying out to the North Sea from Aberdeen and Inverness. Northern Ireland has no strip clubs as it is a lot more conservative than the mainland.

A popular night out

Data released in 2015 revealed that there are 576 strip clubs listed in the UK. Berkshire having the highest concentration per capita with an average of 11 strip clubs per 100,000 people with its 17 registered venues. Surprisingly, London is way down in the list at number 18 with it’s 104 strip clubs, averaging at 1.3 clubs per 100,000 people. As a result, if you are on a night out anywhere in the UK, it is very easy to find clubs and dancers alike. (data source here)

The UK clubs have a larger pool of girls compared to other countries and normally have higher numbers on any night. This is in contrast to European clubs. The numbers range from 10 in smaller venues to anything upto 200 in larger, more well known clubs.

Peter Stringfellow is one UK owner of note as his flagship club was one of the first opened in 1980 in London’s Covent Garden. Since then he has opened clubs in New York, Miami, Beverley Hills, Dublin and Paris. Of these clubs, he is now in ownership of two, Stringfellow’s in Covent Garden and Angels in Soho. (source here). As one of the strip club pioneers within the UK, Peter Stringfellow has hugely influenced the style of stripping in the UK. Clubs are hugely influenced by the American style with commission structure and in terms of larger, busier venues. The main difference is there being a lack of focus on stage shows and stage tips.
