One of there most famous London strip pubs was; The White horse. Windmill Theatre London Strip Club

The oldest club in London is the Windmill theatre.

The Windmill International is the oldest strip club in the UK.  Having been in business for over 80 years. This iconic club’s history can be traced back to 1932 when the Theatre introduced nudity on stage for the first time in Britain.

The club remained defiantly open even at the height of the Blitz during the Second World War.

While bombs were raining down on the capital. London’s Windmill Theatre club gave countless future stars the chance to try out their comedy routines, including Harry Secombe, Bruce Forysth, Peter Sellers and Tony Hancock. One of the prime conditions – in fact, the only condition. When The Windmill first acquired its licence for nudity was that the naked flesh on display would only be permitted on the basis that the dancers.  Ahem – models – would be the equivalent of living art. Today, the club has undergone radical changes, not least of which is the jiggling of that once statue still female physique. There are choreographed shows that see Brazilian, Chinese and Afro American perform anything from hip hop to carnival. The emphasis is strongly on entertainment, rather then 5 star pole dance displays.

The Gentlemens club scene in London has had many great characters and the best known one was Peter Stringfellow.

He was a pioneer of strip clubs and is known around the world.  Also Paul Raymond , who started the boom in British strip clubs by opening “ Raymond’s Revuebar” in 1958. He died in 2008 aged 83 one of Britain’s richest men. The new venue Raymond’s Revuebar was to be a private members club as

Paul Raymond with 2 dancers in London

such not covered by the Lord Chamberlain’s rules. Then be able to offer moving nude dancers for the first time in the UK. The club was a great success and by 1960 it had 45,000 members. It was visited by many of London’s celebrities of the time like John Mills, Peter Sellers, and Stanley Baker. The authorities were still very straight laced in those days and still tried to restrict the acts leading to a series of what now sound ludicrous complaints. In 1961 Raymond was fined £5,000 {the price of a new Rolls Royce then !}. For allowing the audience to ring the bells of the Ding Dong Bell girl ! The various complaints actually acted as good publicity and as the notoriety of the place grew so it got even busier. The new much more raunchy Revuebar saw the closure of the old Windmill.

The war between established Stringfellows and newcomer US giant Spearmint Rhino.

In 2000 John Grey of Spearmint Rhino established the first Spearmint UK club in London. This club became a hard competitor to Peter Stringfellows, famous and well established Gentlemen club Stringfellows.
