Strip Clubs in Trondheim — Dreams Showbar, the City’s Only Venue

Trondheim has one strip club, and has had the same one for over twenty years: Dreams Showbar on Munkegata. It is the only venue of its kind in the city, and the only one operating anywhere in Norway outside Oslo.

Dreams Showbar

Dreams runs 15 to 20 stage shows a night with performers from Norway and abroad, which is a high rotation by Norwegian standards and reflects the fact that it is the only game in town. The club has passed 100,000 guests since it opened, and it is run by the same operation that founded it — Atle Maaø opened Dreams in 2002 and it is now operated by ERMA AS.

Unusually for a Norwegian showbar, Dreams also books dancers for outside events — stag nights, birthdays and private parties in Trondheim — and rents out the venue for closed functions outside normal opening hours.

What to expect

Norwegian strip clubs are called showbars, and the name is accurate. A rotation of dancers performs on stage through the night at no extra cost beyond the door — the show is not an upsell. Private shows and bottle service are sold separately, on what the industry calls the champagne system: you are buying the performer’s time, and drinks carry a premium over normal bar prices because of it.

Tipping is not standard practice in Norway. It is welcome, never expected, and nobody will chase you for it.

The rules

• No touching. Not on the floor, not in private. This is Norwegian law rather than house policy, and it applies in every venue in the country.
• Prostitution is illegal in Norway and does not take place in these clubs.
• Alcohol hours are enforced. Norwegian licensing cuts off alcohol service before closing time. Order in good time — drinks get cleared when the deadline passes, even though the club stays open.
• Bring ID. The age limit is 20, two years above the general Norwegian drinking age for beer and wine, and it is checked.

Getting there

Munkegata is the main axis through central Trondheim, running from the Nidaros Cathedral down to the harbour. Dreams sits on it, a short walk from Torvet, the central square, and well within walking distance of the city’s hotels. You will not need a taxi to get there, though you may want one at four in the morning.
